(3) Nearly every day, you and I handle small coins and bank-notes. We need them for food and clothing. When we want to buy something, we always have to pay for it with money. But what would we have done when there were no metal coins and paper notes?
Many thousands of years ago, men did not have any money. The first men lived in caves. There are roots and berries. Sometimes they caught small animals. Often they were hungry and cold.
Time moved on and men learned to make tools out of stone. Now they were about to catch larger animals. They started to use animal skins to keep warm. They also learned to grow plants. For their way of life they didn’t need any money.
But soon men found that they liked one kind of work better than another. Some men wanted to hunt. Others had more fun growing things. Many liked to cut weapons out of stone. But all of them had to eat and wear clothes. And everyone needed tools and weapons. So they started to trade with each other. For money, they used the skins of animals and the weapons they made of stone.
More people began raising cattle and farming. Men began using cattle as goods with which to trade. But they soon found that this way of trading was not good. If a farmer wanted to get a few tools he had to pay for them with a calf. Since the calf was worth more than the tools, the farmer might have to buy things he didn’t need. There was no way to give change back. Then the farmer was not happy.
It was not long before people began to use all kinds of “money”. They traded with salt, animals’ tails and teeth, and tobacco. On one island they cut large round stones and made holes in the middle. Two strong men had to carry these stones on a pole.
Then, almost seven thousand years ago, men found a metal. It was copper. From this they made pots and bowls. Now these were used for trading. But even so, many pots were still too heavy to carry about.
Men kept thinking of even better ways to make “money”. First they cut the copper into strips. Then they made it into coins something like our copper pennies today. These were worth as much as they weighed. Soon other metals were found. Some of them were worth a lot more than copper, and others a lot less. Not all people knew the worth of these new metals. So men had to think of something else. They had to be sure that no one could be dishonest in his trading. So they marked the coins. They wrote on each coin just how much it was worth.
But there was still one thing wrong. If men wanted to buy something big, they had to take bugs filled with coins. And they were so heavy. So what did they do? They have money lighter. They made it out of paper.
We still use small coins and paper notes today. Could there be an even easier way to carry money? If so, men will surely find it.

Many people think of a school as buildings, teachers, and students. Proprietary schools, however, think first of the students. They are interested most in satisfying their customers –the students.
Proprietary schools are privately owned vocational schools. To remain in business they must give students what they, the students, want to learn-at a fair price. The students themselves normally pay for the cost of the training. Thus, the schools must offer training that is practical and that will help the student get a paying job. Generally, the training lasts from six months one year.
In the United States, proprietary schools number about 10,000 and that number is growing to meet increasing needs. Courses in proprietary schools not only include training in business and technical skills but also in self-improvement such as painting, crafts, speech, and physical development. The field currently with the most students is cosmetology with nearly 3,000 schools in operation.
Teachers in proprietary schools generally work longer hours for less pay than in public schools. However the quality of instruction is high because teachers work closely with students. Some schools ask students to evaluate the teachers.
Proprietary schools emphasize applied rather than theoretical knowledge. They often are willing to experiment with new ideas in their teaching. The teachers themselves come from the real world of work. Most of them are professionals and they know what the students will need on the job.
Courses are given in short segments. This helps to give students a sense of accomplishment. Automated education is used with success and team teaching is common.
The student, of course, is interested in results. Will he get a good job? Generally, most of them do and this can be counted as success in education!

(5) Not every service or product meets your satisfaction. When you are dissatisfied, you should voice your dissatisfaction. One reason for doing so is to help the vendor (卖主) know there is a problem. The problem may have been created at a lower level in the vendor’s company, and the vendor himself may know nothing about it at all. You render him a service when you bring weaknesses or failures to his attention.
A second reason for writing a letter of complaint to a vendor is to seek redress. You may not wish to pursue the matter so far as to take legal action but you may wish to give the vendor the opportunity of making good. Most vendors value your business and their reputation sufficiently to replace defective goods, resupply work that did mot meet specifications, or refund money(退款) when necessary. No vendor likes to do so, but your carefully worded letter of complaint may motivate him to do so.
When you write a letter of complaint, you’d better keep these TIPS in mind: First, be courteous though firm . You will not win a vendor’s cooperation by anger. Secondly be reasonable. Show logically and factually that the fault lies with the vendor or his claims . The vendor should be impressed with your fairness and quiet grasp of the facts in the matter. Thirdly, be specific about what is wrong. Be equally specific about what you want done about it. Lastly, tell how you have been hurt or inconvenienced by the problem. This strengthens your argument for redress.

(6) From the moment of birth, a baby has a great deal to say to his parents, and they to him. But a decade or so ago, psychologists were describing the newborn as a primitive creature who reacted only by reflex, a helpless victim of its environment without capacity to influence it. And mothers accepted the gospel. Most thought (and some still do) that a new infant could see only blurry shadows, that his other senses were undeveloped, and that all he required was nourishment clean diapers, and a warm bassinet.
Today university laboratories across the country are studying newborns in their first month of life. As a result, psychologists now describe the new baby as perceptive, with remarkable learning abilities and an even more remarkable capacity to shape his or her environment
When a mere nine minutes old, an infant prefers a human face to a head-shaped outline. By the time he’s twelve hours old, his entire body moves in precise synchrony to the sound of a human voice, as if he were dancing.
At the end of a week, a newborn recognizes something familiar about the mother who has fed him from birth. And by four weeks, infants are already able to recognize subtle differences in language sounds and can distinguish baa and maa.
These examples illustrate the newborn’s fine discrimination and sensitivity to human contact. All five of a baby’s senses are in working order from the moment of birth. The newborn can distinguish color from black and white. If you move an object slowly before his face, his eyes and even his head will follow it.
Hearing is even more acute. Shake a rattle, and the newborn turns his head toward the sound. He startles at a sudden loud noise. When an infant’s cry brings a quick response, he starts to learn the purpose of language. Other senses—taste, smell, touch —are equally acute.

(8) It was midnight in Paris and we were rolling toward the Avenue Bosquel. As we came to the Pont Alexander III, the cab slowed down, for the traffic light was red against us, and then, without stopping, we sailed through the red light in a sudden burst of speed. The same performance was repeated at the Alma Bridge. As I paid the driver, I asked him why he had driven through two red lights.
“You ought to be ashamed of yourself, a veteran like you, breaking the law and endangering your life that way,” I protested.
He looked at me astonished. “Ashamed of myself? Why, I’m proud of myself. I am a law-abiding citizen and have no desire to get killed either.” He cut me off before I could protest.
“No, just listen to me before you complain. What did I do? Went through a red light. Well, did you ever stop to consider what a red light is, what it means?”
“Certainly,” I replied. “It’s stop signal and means that traffic is falling in the opposite direction.”
“Half-right,” said the driver, ‘but incomplete. It is only an automatic stop signal. And it does not mean that there is cross traffic. Did you see any cross traffic during out trip? Of course not. I slowed down at the light, looked carefully to the right and to the left. Not another car on the streets at this hour. Well, then! What would you have me do? Should I stop like a dumb animal because an automatic. Brainless machine turns red every forty seconds? No, monsieur, “he thundered, hitting the door with a huge fist. “I am a man, not a machine. I have eyes and a brain and judgment, given me by God. It would be a sin against nature to surrender them to the dictates of a machine. Ashamed of myself, you say? I would only be ashamed of myself if I let those blinking lamps do my thinking for me. Good night, monsieur.”
Is this bad, is this good. Frankly I no longer am sure. I never doubted that it was wrong to drive through a red light, but now I find my old Anglo-Saxon standard somewhat shaken.

(9) A useful tool in achieving a sense of emotional truth onstage (在台上) is what Stanislavski referred to as emotional recall, which is the remembering of a past experience in the performer’s life that is similar to the one in the play. By recalling sensory impressions of an experience in the past ( such as what a room looked like, any prevalent odors, any contact with objects), emotions - from that time -are aroused and can be used as the basis of feelings called for in the play.
A good example would be a scene of farewell, such as Emily saying good﹣bye to her family in Thornton Wilder’s Our Town. Though dead, Emily is allowed to go back to earth for one day, after which she must leave forever. The actress playing Emily might recall a time in her own life when she had to say good﹣bye and was reluctant to do so- the first time she left home, perhaps, or the time she said good﹣bye to a young man she loved. Again, Stanislavski emphasizes details, the important thing for the actress to remember is where she was, what she wore, who she was with-not how she felt. From these concrete facts and images the feeling will follow. In Stanislavski’s words: On the stage there cannot be, under any circumstances, action which is directed immediately at the arousing of a feeling for its own sake… . All such feelings are the result of something that has gone on before. Of the thing that goes before, you should think as hard as you can. As for the result, it will produce itself.
1. Emotional recall helps the performer __________.
to remember his past experience
to think about his old home
to pick up the emotions the character has in the play
to compare his life with the character’s in the play
2. Stanislavski is __________.

4. The actress playing Emily should recall all the following in her life EXCEPT ___________.
A. her friends B. her clothes C. her house D. her feelings
5. In the last sentence, “it will produce itself” means ____________.
A. something will happen in due course
B. one’s acting will be perfect at last
C. a special effect will be produced on the stage
D. the feelings will come naturally
(10) As a small boy, Charles had often been attracted by some bright red berries which grew beside the fence outside the house of an old lady “with corkscrew curls,” he remembered, who lived down the street from the Copeland home. One day as the boy came by the blinds were drawn and the opportunity to indulge (满足) his longing seemed at hand. He plucked a berry and ate it, but its taste was bitter, and he took no more. As he was about to turn away, the blinds of a window flew open, the old lady leaned out and cried, “Now, you naughty boy, you have found your reward. Those berries are deadly poison, which I keep especially for naughty boys. Tomorrow you will be dead!”
Charles’s heart leaped in his breast. Reflecting on how sad a fate it was to die when his life had scarcely begun, he hurried, panic﹣stricken, to his home. There he found his brother Lowell in the hall, and poured out the dreadful story, begging his brother’s forgiveness for all the injuries he had done him, exacting a promise that he would attend the funeral, and telling him of certain prized possessions he would leave to him. Charles then kissed his brother, who was by this time in tears, and went out of the house. In the garden he found his father, and told him all that had happened. His father he remembered, seemed to smile, took him by the hand, and led him back to the scene of his crime. Quivering, before the old lady, Charles implored her forgiveness and begged her to give him something which would forestall (预先阻止)his imminent end. She exacted his eager promise that never again would he molest (骚扰) her property, whereupon she produced a gumdrop and plopped it in his mouth. (11) Men always wanted to fly. For hundreds of years they watched birds flying and wished that they could fly too. Birds fly very easily. They beat the air with their wings and climb up through the air. The air keeps them up.
Men knew how to make kites hundreds of years ago. Kites could stay in the air for many hours. “If birds and kites could stay up in the air, perhaps we can,” they thought.
At first they made wings like birds. Then they jumped off high buildings and tried to fly. Many men did this but they failed to fly. They crashed to the ground. Some were killed and some were badly hurt. After many times they stopped trying to fly with wings. Then two brothers tried another way. They tried balloons. “Hot air is lighter than cold air” they said, “That is why hot air goes upwards. If we fill a balloon with hot air it will go upwards.”
They built a balloon. It was made of thin cloth and paper. They lit a fire beneath it. Up into the air it went! It reached a height of 1,800 metres. Then the air inside the balloon became cool and it slowly downed and gently rested on the ground.
A few months later the brothers sent up another balloon. This time there was a basket handing underneath it. In the basket there were three animals: a sheep, a duck and a hen. Then balloon traveled through the air to a place two and half kilometers away. Then it came down safely to earth. Now it was time for men to fly! In October 1783 another of the brother’s balloons went up. This time a man went with it. The balloon did not rise very far. It went only to twenty-five metres. It was tied to the ground by a rope. A month later two men went up in a balloon full of hot air. This time there was no rope! A great crowd of people watched. The balloon rose to a height of 900 metres. The wind blew it along for nine kilometers. Then it came gently back to earth. Men had traveled through the air for the first time.
Other men filled the balloons with a gas called hydrogen. Hydrogen is much lighter than air. Balloons filed with it were able to travel long distances. But the men in the basket underneath could not steer them. They went where the wind took them.
Later balloons were made in the shape of a cigar. These were called airships. They had engines to drive them along, and they could be steered a little. But they were still blown about by the wind. The hydrogen gas was dangerous, too. It caught fire very easily. There were many accidents and many people died. At last they stopped making airships.

(12) Doctors have known for a long time that extremely loud noises can cause hearing damage or loss. The noise can be the sound of a jet airplane or machines in factories or loud music or other common sounds found at home and at work..
A person only needs to hear the noise for little more than one second to be affected. An American scientist had found that using aspirin can increase the temporary hearing loss or damage from loud noise. He did an experiment, using a number of male students at a university who all had normal hearing. He gave them different amounts of aspirin for different periods of time, then he tested hearing ability. He found that students who were given four grams of aspirin a day for two days suffered much greater temporary hearing loss than those who did not use aspirin. The hearing loss was about twice as great.
The scientist said millions of persons in the United States use much larger amounts of aspirin than were used in the study. He said these persons face a serious danger of suffering hearing loss from loud noises.

C. whether the person who had hearing damage should use aspirin
D. whether aspirin would increase the temporary hearing damage from loud noises
(13) Americans have a strong love for anything on wheels. A person spends a good part of his infancy in carriages and strollers. Later he can have his first self-propelled wheels in the form of roller skates, a bicycle or a skateboard. As an adult, his choice of wheels is wide and still growing.
Mopeds are the newest things on city and suburban streets. They are basically motorized bicycles. According to consumer magazines, they have both advantages and disadvantages. They score high on operating costs and fuel conservation. They get 100 miles to a gallon of gas. Furthermore, they are easy to park. Most states do not require insurance of safety precautions such as helmets. This is convenient for owners but also dangerous. Mopeds travel at only 20-30 miles per hour. This speed is enough to cause serious injury in an accident.
Some people say mopeds are the perfect compromise between a bicycle and a motorcycle. Others feel they run a poor second to either one. Happy sales representatives say, “Just look at the figures. You’ll see a lot more people like them than dislike them. They’re selling like crazy!”

(14) One evening last week my wife and I were sitting quietly at home. She was looking at the television while I was reading a book. Suddenly we heard a loud bang. I supposed that the old lady in the flat above ours was moving the furniture about. My wife was afraid that the noise would wake the baby. She turned down the television and a moment later we heard someone calling for help.
I ran upstairs. The old lady’s door was shut but I could see smoke coming through the letter box and under the door and could smell something burning. “The flat is on fire,’ I shouted down to my wife. ‘Ring the fire brigade.’
I banged on the door but the old lady took a long time to answer. I was turning over in my mind the idea of breaking the door down when she finally appeared.
‘I was having a bath,’ she said, ‘when the water heater in the kitchen blew up.’
‘Why didn’t you open the door?’ I asked her.
‘I was getting dressed when you knocked,’ she said, looking embarrassed.
I took her downstairs to our flat. Then I ran back, went inside the old lady’s flat and turned the gas off to prevent another explosion. Smoke was pouring out of the kitchen and the heater was in flames. Just then I heard a fire engine arriving outside and the heavy footsteps of the firemen on the stairs. I looked round and noticed two of them standing in the doorway. ‘It’s in here,’ I said. ‘You turned up promptly, I must say’.
When I got back to our flat my wife was making the old lady a cup of tea. Soon afterwards, the fire chief came in to ask some questions. It turned out that the fire was not very serious and the firemen were already putting it out. When they left my wife went up with the old lady to help her clear up the mess.
When she returned, my wife remarked: ‘It’s all right now. Nothing is damaged except the heater. But wasn’t it lucky that Baby slept through all that noise?’
She took the teacups into the kitchen and I heard her scream and the cups crashed to the floor. When I got there, water was dripping slowly from the ceiling and forming a pool on the floor. The baby woke up at last and started to cry.

(15) According to figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average weekly income for a woman in 1983 was $260. For the same year, men had average weekly earnings of $393. For some people, these figures are clear evidence that there is still sex discrimination in the area of pay in the U.S.. However, I would argue that this explanation is too simple. In order to get an accurate picture of the situation, we must examine the types of jobs which are typically held by men and by women. When we do this, we find that certain occupations seem to be primarily female while others seem to be primarily male occupations. In the medical and legal professions, for example, statistics show that 85% of all doctors and lawyers are men (although this situation is changing). More than 90% of all engineers are men. Women, however, have been the majority for a long time in other occupations. For example, 99 out of every 100 secretaries are women, and 95% of all nurses are female. From these statistics, it is clear that women tend to enter certain occupations and not others. The occupations which they enter are often in service industries and often have one common feature: they do not pay well. It can be argued that this is the principal reason for the difference in earnings between men and women. In addition, we can expect the pay situation to change in the future, because more qualified women are beginning careers in medicine, law, business, scientific research, and engineering.
1. What jobs have typically been held by women?____
A. Jobs as doctors and lawyers.
B. Jobs in service industries.
C. Jobs in areas without sex discrimination.

A. The majority of people working in medical professions are male.
B. There is still a difference between the earnings of men and women.
C. The difference between men's pay and women's pay will become larger and larger.
D. Women and men will exchange their jobs in most areas.
3. In the opinion of the writer, why do women still earn less money than men?____
A. Some professions are not suitable for women.
B. The principle of "equal pay for equal work" isn't observed.
C. It is very difficult to change people's attitude towards the roles of women.
D. Women are often in the majority in low-paying jobs.
4. According to the passage, what can we expect in the legal profession in the future?____
A. There will be more male lawyers.
B. The number of female lawyers will rise.

5. What is the author's attitude towards the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics?____
A. Critical. B. Supportive. C. Negative. D. Encouraging.
(16) People tend to be more impressed by evidence that seems to confirm some relationship. Thus many are convinced their dreams are prophetic (预言的) because a few have come true; they neglect or fail to notice the many that have not.
Consider also the belief that "the phone always rings when I'm in the shower.” If it does ring while you are in the shower, the event will stand out and be remembered. If it doesn't ring, that nonevent probably won't even register.
People want to see order, pattern and meaning in the world. Consider, for example, the common belief that things like personal misfortunes, plane crashes, and deaths "happen in threes." Such beliefs stem from the tendency of people to allow the third event to define the time period. If three plane crashes occur in a month, then the period of time that counts as their "happening together" is one month; if three crashes occur in a year, then the period of time is stretched. Flexible end points reinforce such beliefs.
We also tend to believe what we want to believe. A majority of people think they are more intelligent, more fair-minded and more skilled behind the wheel of an automobile than the average person. Part of the reason we view ourselves so favorably is that we use criteria that work to our advantage. As economist Thomas Schelling explains, "Everybody ranks himself high in qualities he values: careful drivers give weight to care, skilled drivers give weight to skill, and those who are polite give weight to courtesy." This way everyone ranks high on his own scale.
Perhaps the most important mental habit we can learn is to be cautious (谨慎的) in drawing conclusions. The "evidence" of everyday life is sometimes misleading.

(18) Recently, two professors of the University of Nebraska conducted a weekly broadcast during which they discussed worthwhile books, of both recent and older vintage. Even primary school graduates watched, listened and learned.
Consequently, it is not accurate to say that ETV has not been taught in the United States. I doubt the statement that "programs which inform and enrich the mind in a general manner are wasted in schools". There is a need to teach, directly by television even "if we take teaching in the broad sense of the term".
Direct teaching by television has been explained as "a series of television lessons directly related to a specific classroom syllabus, addressed to the specific needs of pupils and teachers in a specific subject". Each lesson will be prepared by a teacher-specialist who also knows television production techniques and in a television studio uses all the audio-visual aids of modern technology to put across his subject.
Do such TV lessons dispense with the services of a classroom teacher or will they cost him his reputation or job? No! In fact, without the classroom teacher to review the material, enlarge on it and answer questions that the students may want to bring up, such TV lessons would not be of very great value.
The children who watch ETV do so with varying results -- from very good to fair. Possibly, the programs are too uniform or too serious. Generally, they are not too long. Very likely, the children who benefit least are the slow learners. There is a bright future for ETV inside and outside the classroom. The time may come when bigger and clearer screens or tubes will be used in the classroom and when bigger and better programs will be exchanged on an international scale and when more foreign experts will be brought in, listened to and followed by newcomers in the ETV field.

(19) "We're more than halfway now; it's only two miles farther to the tavern (小旅馆)," said the driver.
"I'm glad of that," answered the stranger. He meant to say more but the east wind blew clear down a man's throat if he tried to speak. The girl's voice was something quite charming, however, and presently he spoke again.
"You don't feel the cold so much at twenty below zero out in the Western country. There's none of this damp chill (湿冷)," he said, and then it seemed as if he had blamed the uncomplaining young driver. She had not even said that it was a disagreeable day, and he began to be conscious of a warm hopefulness of spirit.
"You'll have cold drive going back!" he said anxiously, and put up his hand for the twentieth time to see if his coat-collar was as close to the back of his neck as possible. He had wished a dozen times for the warm old hunting rig (服装) in which he had many a day confronted (遇到) the worst of weather in the Northwest.

(20) How men first learnt to invent words is unknown; in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds, and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken or written in letters, we call words.
The power of words, then, lies in their associations -- the things they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increases.
Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sound like music and by their association can move men to tears. We should therefore learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they will make our speech silly and vulgar.
1. We will make our speech silly if we ____.
A. use words carefully B. use words in a literary style
C. use words without accuracy D. use words with caution
2. One of the reasons why men invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings was that ____.
A. they could express actions and things
B. they could communicate with each other
C. they could agree upon letters
D. they could write and combine them
3. What is true about the words?____
A. They are used to express only thoughts and feelings. B. They are signs.
C. They are simply sounds. D. They can only be written.
4. Which of the following statements is not true?____

Task 3
Washington was the first city in history to be created solely for the purpose of governing. Following the Revolution, members of Congress (国会)had hotly debated the question of a permanent home for themselves and for other departments. In 1792, George Washington was asked to select a site for the newly designed federal district. Not much to anyone’s surprise but to the disappointment of many, he chose a piece of land on the banks of the Potomac River a few miles upstream from his beloved plantation (种植园)Mount Vernon.
The District of Columbia (Washington, D.C.) was taken in part from Virginia and in part from Maryland. At the time it was laid out, its hundred square miles consisted of gently rolling hills with heavy woods, a number of streams and much land along the Potomac River. There is now a section of Washington that is commonly referred to as Foggy Bottom; that section had the same nickname (绰号)a hundred and eight years ago. Two port cities, Alexandria and Georgetown, lied within sight of the new capital. So it was easy to go by ship to the most important cities of the new nation from the new capital——Charlestown, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York, Portsmouth and also to the far-off ports of England and the European Continent.

第二册练习题
Part Ⅰ. Reading Comprehension
(1) Fifteen years ago, I entered the Boston Globe, which was a temple to me then. It wasn’t easy getting hired. But once you were there, I found, you were in.
Globe jobs were for life-guaranteed until retirement. For 15 years I had prospered there — moving from an ordinary reporter to foreign correspondent and finally to senior editor. I would have a lifetime of security if I struck with it. Instead, I had made a decision to leave. I entered my boss’s office. Would he rage? I wondered. He had a famous temper. “Matt, we have to have a talk,” I began awkwardly. “I came to the Globe when I was twenty-four. Now I’m forty. There’s a lot I want to do in life. I’m resigning.” “To another paper?” he asked. I reached into my coat pocket, but didn’t say anything. I handed him a letter that explained everything. It said that I was leaving to start a new media company. We were at a rare turning point in history. I wanted to be directly engaged in the change. “I’m glad for you,” he said, quite out of my expectation. “I just came from a board of directors meeting and it was seventy-five percent discouraging news. Some of that we can deal with. But much of it we can’t, ” he went on. “I wish you all the luck in the world,” he concluded. “And if it doesn’t work out, remember, your star is always high here.”
Then I went out of his office, walking through the newsroom for more good-byes. Everybody was saying congratulations. Everybody — even though I’d be risking all on an unfamiliar venture: all the financial security I had carefully built up.
Later, I had a final talk with Bill Taylor, chairman and publisher of the Boston Globe. He had turned the Globe into a billion-dollar property. “I’m resigning, Bill, ”I said. He listened while I gave him the story. He wasn’t looking angry or dismayed either. After a pause, he said, “Golly, I wish I were in your shoes.”

A. newspaper B. magazine C. temple D. church
2. If the writer stayed with the Globe _________.

B. he would let his long-cherished dreams fade away.
C. he would never have to worry about his future life.
D. he would never be allowed to develop his ambitions.
3. The writer wanted to resign because _________.
A. he had serious trouble with his boss.
B. he got underpaid at his job for the Globe.
C. he wanted to be engaged in the new media industry.
D. he had found a better paid job in a publishing house.
4. When the writer decided to resign the Globe was faced with _______.
A. a trouble with its staff members
B. a shortage of qualified reporters
C. an unfavorable business situation
D. an uncontrollable business situation
5. By “:I wish I were in your shoes.” (in the last paragraph) Bill Taylor meant that _______.
A. the writer was to fail. B. the writer was stupid
C. he would do the same if possible D. he would reject the writer’s request
(2) Do you find it very difficult and painful to get up in the morning? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.
During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you’re “hot”. That’s true. The time of day when you feel most energetic is when your cycle of body temperature is at its peak. For some people the peak comes during the forenoon. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar monologues as: “Get up, Peter! You’ll be late for work again!” The possible explanation to the trouble is that Peter is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.
You can’t change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit if better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you’re sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract your cycle to some extent by habitually staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning, but you have an important to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won’t change your cycle, but you’ll get up steam and work better at your low point.
Get off to a slow start which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save requiring more energy or concentration for your sharper hours.
1. If a person finds getting up early a problem, most probably ________.
A. he is a lazy person.
B. he refuses to follow his own energy cycle.
C. he is not sure when his energy is low.
D. he is at his peak in the afternoon or evening.

A. help to keep your energy for the day’s work.
B. help you to control your temper early in the day

C. Habit helps a person adapt to his own energy cycle.
D. Children have energy cycles, too.
(3) Paris, Jan. 11-An armored car robbery last night ended in wild gun battle that left two men dead and a hostage (人质) seriously wounded.
The drama began when an armored car carrying the contents of safe deposit boxes to a bank was struck by a large truck police said.
The bank guards were helpless when the robbers jumped out of the truck and tied them up. The thieves used heavy tools and explosives to break open the armored car.
A passing police car turned to investigate the accident as the men was removing the contents of the armored car. Police said the three robbers fled on foot across a nearby highway.
Stopping a private car driven by a teenaged girl, the three headed for central Paris with the police car in hot pursuit (追捕).
A plain clothes policeman saw the car as it drove through the street of Latin Quarter. The policeman tried to stop the car, but the thieves started shooting at him, witness (目击者) said. The girl hostage tried to slip away. Just as she was crawling away from the car, she was hit by a bullet. Police said she was out of danger at Central Hospital.
The gunmen gave up the car and got into a shop, pouring fire on more than 50 policemen that surrounded the building. After a wild gun battle, police

(4) There was one thought that air pollution affected only the area immediately around large cities with factories and heavy automobile traffic. At present, we realize that although these are the areas with the worst air pollution, the problem is literally worldwide. On several occasions over the past decade, a heavy cloud of air pollution has covered the east of the United States and brought health warnings in rural areas away from any major concentration of manufacturing and automobile traffic. In fact, the very climate of the entire earth may be infected by air pollution. Some scientists consider that the increasing concentration of carbon dioxide in the air resulting from the burning of fossil fuels (coal and oil) is creating a “greenhouse effect”— conserving heat reflected from the earth and raising the world's average temperature. If this view is correct and the world's temperature is raised only a few degrees, much of the polar ice cap will melt and cities such as New York, Boston, Miami, and New Orleans will be in water.
Another view, less widely held, is that increasing particular matter in the atmosphere is blocking sunlight and lowering the earth's temperature — a result that would be equally disastrous. A drop of just a few degrees could create something close to a new ice age, and would make agriculture difficult or impossible in many of our top farming areas. Today we do not know for sure that either of these conditions will happen (though one recent government report drafted by experts in the field concluded that the greenhouse effect is very possible) Perhaps, if we are lucky enough, the two tendencies will offset each other and the world's temperature will stay about the same as it is now. Driven by economic profits, people neglect the damage on our environment caused by the “advanced civilization”. Maybe the air pollution is the price the human beings have to pay for their development. But is it really worthwhile?
1. As pointed out at the beginning of the passage, people used to think that air pollution _______.
A. cause widespread damage in the countryside
B. affected the entire eastern half of the United States
C. had damaged effect on health
D. existed merely in urban and industries areas

A. share the same view with the scientist.
B. is uncertain of its occurrence
C. rejects it as being ungrounded
D. thinks that it will destroy the world soon
3. The word “offset” in the second paragraph could be replaced by _________.
A. slip into B. make up for C. set up D. catch up with
4. It can be concluded that ____________.
A. raising the world's temperature only a few degrees would not do much harm to life on earth.
B. lowering the world's temperature merely a few degrees would lead major farming areas to disaster.
C. almost no temperature variations have occurred over the past decade.
D. the world's temperature will remain constant in the years to come.
5. This passage is primarily about __________.
A. the greenhouse effect…… B. the burning of fossil fuels……
C. the potential effect of air pollution. D. the likelihood of a new ice age.
(5) If you ask some people “How did you learn English so well?” you may get a surprising answer, “In my sleep!”
These are people who have taken part in one of the recent experiments to test “Learn-While-Sleep” methods, which are now being tried in several countries, and with several subjects, of which English is only one.
Specialists say that this sleep-study method speeds language learning greatly. They say that the average person can learn two or three times as much during sleep as in the same period during the day and this doesn’t affect his rest in any way. A word of warning, however, sleep teaching will only strengthen in your mind what you have studied already while you are awake.
In the experiment, lessons were broadcast over the radio. Each lesson lasted twelve hours, from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m.. The first three hours of English grammar and vocabulary were given with the student awake. At 11 p.m. a lullaby was broadcast to set the student to sleep and for the next three hours the radio whispered the lesson again into his sleeping ears. At 2 a.m. a sharp noise was sent over the radio to wake the sleeping student up for a few minutes to review the lesson. The soft songs sent him back to rest again while the radio went on. At 5 a.m. his sleep ended and he had to go through the lesson again for three hours before breakfast.
1. Compared with other methods of learning, the Learn—While –Sleep method is ________________.
A. slower B. quicker C. very simple D. very tiring

(6) The human body has developed its millions of nerves to be highly aware of what goes on both inside and outside of it.
This helps us adjust to the outside world. Without our nerves and our brain, which is a system of nerves, we couldn’t know what’s happening. But we pay for our sensitivity. We can feel pain when the slightest thing is wrong with any part of our body. The history of torture ( 折磨 ) is based on the human body being open to pain.
But there is a way to handle pain. Look at the Indian fakir ( 苦行僧 ) who sits on a bed of nails. Fakirs can put a needle fight through an arm, and feel no pain. This ability that some humans have developed to handle pain should give us ideas about how the mind can deal with pain.
The big thing in withstanding pain is our attitude toward it. If the dentist says, "This will hurt a little," it helps us to accept the pain. By staying relaxed, and by treating the pain as an interesting sensation ( 感觉 ), we can handle the pain without falling apart. After all, although pain is an unpleasant sensation, it is still a sensation, and sensations are the stuff of life.
1. The human body has developed a system of nerves that enables us to

D. some people are born without a sense of pain
4. What is essential for people to stand pain according to the writer?
A. Their relaxation. B. Their interest. C. Their nerves. D. Their attitude.
5. The author believes that
A. feeling pain is part of our life B. pain should be avoided at all costs
C. feeling pain can be an interesting thing
D. magic power is essential for reducing pain

(8) Visitors to Britain are sometimes surprised to learn that newspapers there have such a large circulation. The “Daily Mirror” and the “Daily Express” both sell about four million copies every day. British families generally buy a newspaper every morning and frequently take two or three on Sundays.
Apart from the national papers, there is, however, another branch of the British press which sells almost as many copies. Local newspapers have a weekly circulation of 13 million. Almost every town and country area has one. Nearly all of them hold their own financially and many of them are very profitable.
These papers are written almost entirely for readers interested in local events—births, weddings, deaths, council meetings and sports—but the content is naturally influenced by the kind of community they serve. Editors prefer to rely on a small staff of people who all know the district well. A great deal of local news is regularly supplied by clubs and churches in the neighborhood and it does not get out of date as quickly as national news. If there is no room for it in this week’s edition, an item can sometimes be held over until the following week.
The editor must never forget that the success of any newspaper depends on advertising. He is usually anxious to keep the good will of local businessmen for this reason. But if the newspaper is well written and the news items have been carefully chosen to attract local readers, the businessmen are grateful for the opportunity to keep their products in the public eye.
Local newspapers do not often comment on problems of national importance and editors rarely hold with taking sides on political questions. But they can often be of service to the community in expressing public feeling on local issues. A newspaper can sometimes persuade the council to take action to provide better shopping facilities, improve transport in the area and preserve local monuments and places of interest.
These papers often sound rather dull and it seems surprising that they all make a profit. But for many people in small towns and villages the death of someone known to them or the installation of traffic lights at a busy corner nearby can sometimes be more important than a disaster in a foreign country.
1. Local newspapers have __________.

What if you say it first and your partner doesn’t love you back? Or if they do say it but you don’t feel they mean it? Being the first to declare your love can be never racking(紧张)and risky and can leave you feeling as vulnerable as a turtle with no shell. But is the person who says it first really in a position of weakness? Doesn’ t it pay to hold back, play it cool and wait until the other half has shown their hand fast?
A really good relationship should be about being fair and being equal," says psychologist Sidney Crown. "But love is seldom equal. " All. relationships go through power struggles but, he says, if a love imbalance continues for years, the rot will set in. "That feeling of‘ I’ve always loved you more’ may be subverted(颠覆,破坏) for a time, but it never goes away completely and it often emerges in squabbling(大声争吵). " In love, at least, the silent, withholding type is not always the most powerful. "The strongest one in a relationship is often the person who feels confident enough to talk about their feelings," says educational psychologist Ingrid Collins. Psychosexual therapist Paula Hall agrees. "The one with the upper hand is often the person who takes the initiative. In fact, the person who says ‘I love you’ first may also be the one who says ’ I’ m bored with you’ first. " Hall believes that much depends on how "I love you" is said and the motivation of the person saying it. "Is it said when they’ re drunk? Is it said before their partner files off on holiday, and what it really means is ‘ Please don’ t be unfaithful to me’ ? By saying ‘ I love you’, they are really saying ‘Do you love me?’ If so, wouldn’t it just be more honest to say that.. Collins agrees that intention is everything. "It’s not what is said, but how it’ s said. What it comes down to is the sincerity of the speaker.”

(10) Nancy Jeschke’s sleeping difficulties began on vacation a few summers ago. She blamed the noisy motel room, but her sleeping did not improve at home. Instead of her usual six to seven hours a night, the 37-year-old teacher slept just three or four. “I’d toss and turn for hours, then get up and pace,” she says.
Nancy tried going to bed earlier, but the slightest noise, even her husband’s breathing, disturbed her. She drank a glass of wine at bed-time and fell asleep immediately, but was awake two hours later. Her doctor prescribed a sleeping pill for two weeks. When she stopped taking the pills, though, she slept worse than ever.
Most of us have the occasional short period of troubled sleep and then return to normal a few nights later. However, for one in six people insomnia (失眠) is a continual problem.
Now the Johns Hopkins Sleep Disorders Center in Balitimore has developed a nine-step treatment to help insomniacs cure themselves. It is based on the idea that by deliberately reducing time in bed and by modifying your waking activities, you will be able to sleep more soundly.
Psychologist Richard Allen, co-director of the Johns Hopkins Center, considers insomnia a 24-hour disorder. Thus, his treatment, which draws on research done by Arthur Spielman of the Sleep Disorders Center of the City College of New York, includes advice on daytime as well as bedtime behavior.

(11) Stage plays, at first, seem a lot like films. Both use actors and dialogue and scenery. But if you try to make a film by setting up a camera in front of the stage, you will find it won't work. A film made in this way will leave the audience cold, and even worse you'll be wasting a powerful tool —— the camera.
A stage is actually a box. One side of the box has been removed so the audience can see what's going on inside. The actors remain at a fixed audience. In the film, however, the camera can bring the audience up close and fix their attention on small but important things: a frightened look, a whisper, a trembling of hands.
The camera offers the film maker freedom allowing him to move easily across barriers(界限) of time and space. He can show his action in real cities and on real farms. He can also use the camera to change the scene dozens of times in one film. No expert of the stage can do this.
1..The main idea of the text is that ________ .
A. stage plays and films are two different kinds of art
B. it is always disappointing to turn play into films
C. films have certain advantages(长处) over stage plays
D. the camera has made film making easy and possible

A. fewer and fewer people will go to the theatre.
B. the audience cannot see what is going on on the stage.
C. the scene cannot be changed from time to time.
D. the powerful camera cannot be made good use of.
3. Which of the following can show that the camera is a powerful tool ?
A. it can move easily. B. it can make small things look larger.
C. it can show things in the future. D. it can give us a scene of realism.

A. films often use real scenery while plays don't.
B. films can show the past while plays can't.
C. films change scenes while plays don't.
D. film audience can move while play audience can't.
5. A suitable title for this text is _______.
A. stage plays and film B. the powerful camera
C. fewer plays, more films D. less waste, more freedom
(12) English food has a bad reputation abroad. This is most probably because foreigners in England are often obliged (不得不) to eat in the more “popular” type of restaurant. Here it is necessary to prepare food rapidly in large quantities, and the taste of the food inevitably suffers, though its quality, from the point of view of nourishment (营养状况), is quite satisfactory. Still, it is rather dull and not always attractively presented. Moreover, the Englishman eating in a cheap or medium price restaurant is usually in a hurry-at least at lunch-and a meal eaten in a leisurely manner in pleasant surroundings is always far more enjoyable than a meal taken hastily in a business-like atmosphere. In general. It is possible to get an adequate meal at reasonable price; in fact, such a meal may be less expensive than similar food abroad. For those with money to spare, there are restaurants that compare favorably with the best in any country.
In many countries breakfast is a snack rather than a meal, but the traditional English breakfast is a full meal; Some people have a cereal or porridge to begin with. Then comes a substantial, usually cooked, course such as bacon (腊肉) and eggs, sausages and bacon. Yorkshire ham is also a breakfast speciality. Afterwards comes toast, with butter and marmalade (果子酱), and perhaps some fruit. Tea or coffee is drunk with meal. Many English people how take such a full breakfast only on Sunday morning.

A.. Rice. B. Bacon and eggs. C.. Ham. D. Toast.
4. In England, the traditional breakfast ___________.
is a snack B. is a full meal
C. is taken in a leisurely manner in pleasant surroundings D. is taken hastily
5. We can safely conclude from the passage that ______________.
cheap and medium price restaurants are always overcrowded at noon
foreigners in England often eat in a business-like atmosphere
some of the best restaurants in the world are located in Britain
English people used to have a full breakfast on Sunday only
(13) When people travel to foreign countries, they must change their money into foreign currencies. The same is true when goods are imported. For example, when Americans import Toyotas, Volkswagens, champagne (香槟酒), or coffee, the dollars paid for these goods must be exchanged for yen, Deutsche marks, francs, or pesos. In April 1983 a United States dollar was valued in the foreign exchange markets at 238 Japanese yen, 2.4 West German Deutsche marks, 7.3 French francs, 151 Mexican pesos, and 0.65 British pound. The other way around, a British pound could be exchanged for $1.58. the peso for less than a cent, the franc for 13 cents, the Deutsche mark for 41 cents, and the yen for less than half a cent.
A foreign exchange rate is a kind of price-the price of one country’s currency in terms of another’s. Like all prices, exchange rates rise and fall. If Americans buy more from Japan than the Japanese buy from the United States, the value of the yen tends to rise in terms of the dollar. If over the years one country’s economy grows faster than another’s so that its citizens become relatively more productive, its currency will rise in terms of the other. A United States citizen had to exchange five dollars for a British pound in 1936 and only $ 1.58 in April 1983. The difference reflected the more rapid economic growth of the United States.
1. We learn from the first passage that Volkswagen, coffee, champagne and Toyotas are produced in ______________ respectively.
Japan, Mexico, France and America
Germany, France, Mexico and America
Germany, Mexico, France and Japan
Japan, France, Mexico and Germany
2. According to the passage, when a country wants to import goods from other countries, it ___________.
needs to change its currency into foreign currencies
has to export the same amount of goods to these foreign countries
always pays in its own currency
always pays in US dollars
3. If Germans buy more from Mexico than Mexicans buy from Germany, ______________.
the value of the Deutsche mark tends to rise in terms of the dollar
the value of the Deutsche mark tends to fall in terms of the dollar
the value of the peso tends to rise in terms of the Deutsche mark
the value of the peso tends to fall in terms of the Deutsche mark
4. If a Japanese had to exchange 238 yen for an American dollar in 1983, and only 110 yen in 1996, we can safely conclude that ____________.
the economy of the United States grew more rapidly than that of Japan
the economy of the United States declined
the economy of Japan declined
the economy of Japan grew faster in comparison with that of the United States
5. Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
When American buy Volkswagens from Germany, they have to exchange dollars for marks.
When a Japanese buys champagne produced in France at home, he has to pay in French francs.
People traveling abroad must convert their money into foreign currencies.
You can not import anything if you don’t have foreign currency.
(14) If an American is satisfied with you, he will put his thumb and forefinger into a circle. That means ok, but in Brazil, the very sign is considered to be rude. In Poland, a guest usually presents flowers to his hostess. The number must be an odd(奇数) one. Besides, the hostess isn't expected to remove the cover of the bunch of flowers. And usually, red rose is a sign of love.
Usually we nod to express our agreement and shake our heads to show disapproval. To our surprise these body movements mean the opposite in Bulgaria.(保加利亚)
The differences in customs and cultures in the world are really noticeable. We should learn more about them to avoid them to avoid embarrassment(窘迫). Then, would you please remember: when in Rome, do as the Romans do.

(16) Working with Alvarez was constantly exciting. He seemed to be one of the few physicists developing methods to investigate new areas of science. After six years of formal physics training, my education was finally beginning. I found myself studying Alvarez, trying to understand his approach to problems.
Alvarez has made more discoveries than any other living physicist I know, and I could sense he did it for the excitement, the adventure. He was not a scholar; I was frequently amazed at the facts of physics he did not know. He didn’t clutter his mind needlessly. But when he needed to know something to solve a problem, he learned it with amazing concentration and speed.
My own future research would be modeled on the way I saw him attack his “pyramid (金字塔)project.” Egyptian pyramids are constantly exposed to natural radiation. With a suitable detector, Alvarez realized they could use this radiation to “X-ray” one of the pyramids, and perhaps find a hidden chamber(室内). I guessed that the mysteries of the pyramids were problems he had read about as a child. If Alvarez were to discover a new chamber full of treasures, it could be the greatest achievement of his life.
Alvarez did his “experimental physics” from a desk, thinking the problem through with great thoroughness before setting up any equipment. When others expressed an interest in his work, he welcomed their help. This whole procedure of organization was his greatest lesson to me.
The pyramid was successfully “X-rayed”, but there were no hidden chambers. It was a terrible disappointment. That is the nature of scientific exploration. There may be nothing there.

(17) America is a society in which children have watched about 18,000 television commercials ( 商业广告) by the time that they have reached their middle teens. My friend Jolie learned this fact a few weeks ago and decided to do something about it. She thinks that the number of commercials the children see can influence the way in which they view the world. That is, Jolie believes that children who watch so many ads (广告) will grow up to believe that the most important thing in life is to buy, buy, buy! This, says Jolie, is wrong. A little child cannot understand advertisements for what they are and so believes totally in what he or she hears.
I have been thinking about what Jolie has told me. I suppose that she is right. I knew that it is easy to control the minds of children because they don’t see things logically, as adults do. And I am upset myself at how the advertisers can control a child’s outlook on the world. I think I should join Jolie in her efforts to change advertising methods when it comes to advertisements for children. I really have a responsibility (责任) to make sure that future generations are given every chance to develop their minds without being influenced by anything bad.
Of course, there is another side to the problem. After all, parents ought to take responsibility for what their children watch and how much television they see. I know that many parents just want their children to be quiet, and so they let them watch as much television as they want. But, in the long run, the methods of advertisers have great power because we are a society of consumers (消费者). I only hope that some day there can be an answer to this problem. Children need our guidance, not the guidance of advertisers.
1. Compared with adults, children can ________________.
not tell good advertisements from bad ones
be more interested in TV advertisements
sit for longer hours watching ads
not judge things reasonably
2. The author thinks that ________________.

most TV ads tend to tell lies
D. little children have difficulty in understanding ads

A. parents keep their children away from the television sets
B. advertisements be changed to suit the needs of children
C. more programs be started to give guidance to children
D. ways be found to have the least influence of commercials on children
4. American children will have watched ________________.
18,000 hours of commercials when they are about 15 years old
18,000 television commercials when they are about 15 years old
18,000 hours of commercials when they have reached middle age
18,000 television commercials when they have reached middle age
5. The main idea of the passage is that ____________.
children shouldn’t watch any television commercials
television advertising has a bad influence on children
the number of commercials that children see can influence the way in which they view the world.
Parents ought to take responsibility for what and how much their children watch on TV
(18) I was in a strange city and I didn’t know the city at all, and what is more, I could not speak a word of the language. After having spent my first day in the town-centre, I decided to lose my way on my second day, since I believed that this was the nearest way of getting to know the strange city.
I got on the first bus that passed, rode on it for several stops, then got off it and walked on. The first two hours passed pleasantly enough. Then I decided to turn back to my hotel for lunch. After walking about for some time, I decided I had better ask the way. The trouble was that the only word I knew of the language was the name of the street in which I lived and even that I pronounced badly.
I stopped to ask a friendly-looking newspaper-seller. He smiled and handed me a paper. I shook my head and repeated the name of the street and he put the paper into my hands. I had to give him some money and went on my way. The next person I asked was a policeman. The policeman listened to me carefully, smiled and gently took me by the arm. There was a strange look in his eyes as he pointed right and left again. I nodded politely and began walking in the direction he pointed.
About an hour passed and I noticed that the houses were getting fewer and fewer and green fields were appearing on either side of me. I had come all the way into the country side. The only thing left for me to do was to find the nearest railway station.

got the hotel with the help of the policeman
found the hotel in the direction the policeman pointed
(19) Thousands of years ago, in the middle of an ocean, miles from the nearest island, an undersea volcano broke out. The hot liquid rock piled higher and higher and spread wider and wider. In this way, an island rose up in the sea.
As time went on, hot sun and cool rains made the rock split and break to pieces. Sea waves dashes against the rock.. In this way, soil and sand came into being.
Nothing lived on the naked soil. And the wind and birds brought plant seeds, spiders and other little creatures there. Only plants could grow first. Only they, in sunlight, could produce food from the minerals of the soil, water and air. While many animals landed on the island, they could find no food. A spider spun its web in vain, because there were no insects for its web to catch. Insects couldn’t stay until there were plants for them to eat. So plants had to be the pioneer life on this new island.

(20) The intelligence tests used most often today are based on the work of a Frenchman, Alfred Binet. In 1905, Binet was asked by the French Ministry of Education to develop a way to identify those children in French schools who were too “mentally deficient” to benefit from ordinary schooling and who needed special education. The tests had to distinguish those who were merely behind in school from those who were actually mentally deficient.
The items that Binet and his colleague Theophile Simon included on the test were chosen on the basis of their ideas about intelligence. Binet and Simon believed intelligence includes such abilities as understanding the meaning of words, solving problems, and making common-sense judgements. Two other important assumptions also shaped Binet’s and Simon’s work: (1) that children with mere intelligence will do better in school and (2) that older children have a greater ability than younger children.
Binet’s first test consisted of thirty tasks. They were simple things most children learn as a result of their every-day experiences. The tasks were arranged in groups, according to age. Binet decided which tasks were appropriate for a given age group by giving them first to a large number of children of different ages. If more than half of the children of a given age passed a test, it was considered appropriate for that age group.

(4) All of us communicate with one another non-verbally (I. E. without using words), as 1 as with words. We gesture with eyebrows or a hand, meet someone else's eyes and look 2.
One of the most effective elements 3 body language is eye behavior. Americans are 4 about how and when they meet one another's eyes. In our normal conversation, each eye contact 5 only about a second before one or 6 of them look away. When two Americans look searchingly 7 each other's eyes, emotions are 8 and the relationship becomes more intimate. 9, we carefully avoid this, 10 in appropriate conditions.
Proper street behavior in the United States 11 a nice balance of attention and inattention. You are 12 to look at a passer-by just enough to show that you are 13 of his presence. If you look too little, you 14 stealthy and secretive; too much, 15 you are asking too much about the other. Usually what happens is that people eye each other 16 they are about eight feet apart, at 17 point they cast down their eyes. In parts of the Far East it is 18 to look at the other person at all during conversation. In England the listener stares at the speaker attentively and blinks his eyes occasionally as a 19 of interest. That eye-blink says 20 to Americans, who expect the listener to nod or to murmur something such as "mm-hmm".

(6) As every traveler soon finds out, it is important to know the local time. 1 until the last century, every town and village kept its own time, usually regulated 2 an official public clock set in the town hall or village church. 3 the sun was directly over-head, the clock 4 strike noon. This meant that the time was 5 for each degree of longitude (经度). Saudi Arabia and a few pacific islands still keep this “ sun time.”
6 of the world, however, operates according to time zones 7 by international agreement. The globe is divided 8 24 time zones, one for each hour of the day. Mean time is the time at the Prime Meridian (本初子午线). All the 9 zones are measured according to 10 time or minus time, reflecting the differences 11 the particular time zone and Greenwich mean time. The International Date Line, 12 one day changes to the next, is at 13 near the 180th meridian.
The boundaries between time zones are usually meridians. 14 on some maps they appear to be straight lines, they are 15 great circles. In many places, 16 , the time-zone boundaries have been 17 to accommodate national boundaries and other political or economic divisions. Most nations prefer to have 18 of their territory in the same time zone. Those 19 very large areas, however, need to 20 themselves into two or more zones.

Should we not prize highly 6 most precious gift of nature? 7, because it is almost impossible not to learn to talk, we 8 to undervalue the ability. We are 9 concerned to keep our bodies 10 good repair but less concerned to develop and improve the marvelous faculty springing from the unique relationship 11our vocal cords (声带) and our brains.
The way we talk signals 12 others who and what we are. It declares our 13 , “places” us, sets a price tag14 pour value as human beings. You may 15 . What we are, you may 16 , is something larger and deeper 17 can be summed up18 what we say and how we say it. True. The fact remains, however, 19 in today’s world, dominated by communication and surface impressions, we are all too often, all too hastily, judged by our talk.

(8) It’s official that married people are healthier, or at least they think they are. An American survey of 1 100,000 people shows that despite changing social 2 in society, there is a 3 between being married and being 4 .
One reason could be that people 5 physical, mental or emotional problems are less likely to marry in the first 6 , but married people also benefit 7 greater support from family and friends and this 8 their health. Divorce and bereavement (丧偶) increase stress, as well as affecting many people 9 .
Married people are less likely than single people to smoke, drink heavily or drive 10 they have been drinking. They are also 11 likely to wear seat belts in a car and more married people 12 safety devices in their homes. All of 13 reduces the chances of disease or injury.
Single people by contrast, 14 to lead less organized lives. They take less care of 15 they eat and when they eat it.

(9) “Other countries have a climate; in England we have weather.” This statement, often made by 1 to describe the peculiar meteorological (气象的) conditions of their country, is 2 revealing and true. It is revealing 3 in it we were the Englishman 4 once again that what happens in England is not the same as what happens 5 ; its truth can be felt by any 6 who stays in the country 7 longer than a few days.
In no country 8 than England, it has been said, can 9 experience four seasons in the course of a 10 day! Day may break as a beautiful spring 11 ; an hour or so later black clouds may have appeared 12 nowhere and the rain may be pouring down. At midday conditions 13 be really wintry (冬天般的) with the temperature down 14 about eight degrees or more centigrade. And 15, in the late afternoon the sky will 16 , the sun will begin to shine, and for an hour or two 17 darkness falls, it will be summer.
In England one can experience almost every kind of weather 18 the most extreme. The trouble is that we never can be sure 19 the different types of weather will occur. Yes, laughter is something we can not do without. Otherwise, our life would be too gloomy.
Smiling does not belong to human alone. Once I stayed at an American home 18__ he had a little doggy by the name of Mini. Mini is a lovely pet. Every time, we came home, she jumped up and down and insisted 19__
giving me some lipping. When I held her gently and asked her to give me a little smile, she just 20__ her mouth and half closed her eyes, looking like every inch of smiling. That left a deep impression on me.
